"And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:" Exodus 13:21

After the liberation from Egypt, God began the consecration of the firstborn as a reminder of the great act of salvation He had performed. Every firstborn, both human and animal, belonged to God, reminding them that His mighty hand had freed them from slavery.

When the people left Egypt, God did not lead them by the shortest route, but through the desert. He knew they would face wars if they took the direct route and that their faith was not yet ready for such challenges. In His wisdom, He guided them along a longer, but safe, path.

To ensure they never felt lost, God gave them a visible sign of His presence: the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. This was confirmation that He was with them, guiding and protecting them at all times.
