Recently we have witnessed several attacks on historical statues and monuments by angry civilians. Sometimes it is only graffiti, but in the worst cases, part or all of the monument was destroyed.

We have seen this happening mostly in Europe and in the United States. Usually during large protests and gatherings around a certain polarizing event.

Vandalizing occurs on historical figures whose actions are considered by some to be controversial. Like, for example, a political leader, a general, or someone who was a great hero but committed crimes against the people. In Portugal, one of these was the statue of a known Friar, also a writer. The statue was covered in red paint because indigenous children were part of the sculpture and there was outrage against how the Cristian church behaved in the past.

As much as outrage for what happened in Human history is understandable, does it justify this destruction? Are we calling attention to the tragedies of the past and making a point?

Or are we destroying Human history and memory of the past along with the removal of these figures? What if these monuments are much needed reminders? So that certain events are never repeated...

What do you think?
