The storm came in fast that night, dark clouds swallowing the moon and thunder rolling like distant gunfire. The Maple Hollow Inn sat at the edge of the woods, its windows flickering with candlelight as the power had gone out an hour ago.
Inside, five guests sat around the crackling fireplace in the main lounge, each one looking uneasily at the others.
“It’s strange,” said Claire, a travel writer passing through. “Didn’t the innkeeper say we’d have the whole place to ourselves this weekend?”
“I thought so too,” replied Dan, a quiet man in a black coat who hadn’t shared much since arriving. “But when I got here, the guestbook already had signatures.”
