Have you ever wondered what the hell a vertex is? We all know it has something to do with polygons and working with 3D models, but how and why?
The definition of "vertex" is:
“a point where two or more curves, surfaces, or edges meet”.
The goal in rendering graphics is to create the best result possible, and therefore you must have a good model. In order to make a well-sculpted model, you need clean polygons which are all facing the correct way. The point where these polygons meet is called a vertex.
Another thing that defines a vertex is its location in space, each vertex has 3 numbers that define its location, these are the coordinates (x,y,z). It is important to note that there can be up to 4 vertices per one polygon. This means if you have a square with 4 equal sides each side must meet at exactly 1 vertex.
Importance of having good vertices
The importance of having good vertices is everything. If your vertices are not correctly formed, your model will look like crap and nobody wants that.
So now you know what a vertex is, but why should I care? Just as long as my model looks good right? Wrong. Well kind of. The truth is if your graphics card does not have enough VRAM (the memory used to store data) to handle your models, it will look like crap.
This is because the computer has to store the info on each vertex and its location in space. If there are too many vertices or they are badly formed, this information takes up more memory than necessary so therefore your model looks bad even if it's a well-crafted one.
